Kilimanjaro

The summits of Africa

This remote and little-visited area is located north of Mount Meru in the northeast of Tanzania.

It is known for its spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro National Park is a must-visit. At 5 895 m, Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa. This volcanic massif stands in splendid isolation above the surrounding plains, with its snowy peak looming over the savannah and there are several climbing routes and options available to get closer to this majestic giant or to summit with a professional guide.

One of the most iconic images of the continent is the sight of herds of elephants walking across the savannah with the snowcapped peak of the famous mountain in the background.

It is indeed one of the few areas in Africa where large male elephants with large tusks and more than 50 years old can be seen.

Some of these male elephants live permanently in the area together with the herds of females and their young which tend to migrate between the swamps of Amboseli National Park and the acacia forests of Sinya in search of water and food. Many of them have been studied by Cynthia Moss, the scientist, in Amboseli over a period of 25 years and constitute one of the most healthy elephant populations on the African continent.
