Ngorongoro Highlands

The perfect place to begin

The town of Karatu is the perfect base for exploring the protected area of Ngorongoro or to have a break from safaris in the north.

In the town you can visit the school, Njia Panda, renovated with donations from our Foundation. It’s possible to go on walking safaris in the area, in the woods, the Oldeani volcano or take an excursion to lake Eyasi. Tribes such as the Datoga or the Hadzabe still inhabit these lands.

Places of interest and activities in the Ngorongoro Highlands

Lake Eyasi is located below the Great Rift Valley to the south of Serengeti National Park and southeast of Ngorongoro. The lake provides food to the local fishermen. The Hadza and Datoga tribes live on its banks. An important archaeological discovery with artefacts from the stone age was found in the Mumba cave located in this area.

Tanzanian coffee is not so well known as other African countries coffee is. But it’s the same or even a better quality and has been grown and exported for year. The area of Karatu is exceptional for the cultivation of coffee as its earth is rich in volcanic minerals and for its altitude. There are many farms and plantations one can visit and sample this excellent product.

The colourful town of Karatu serves as a relaxing pause in between safari and safari and is the gateway to the entrance of the Ngorongoro area. There is a mixture of safari jeeps and local buses in its streets as well as the colourful tuk-tuks, oxen drawn carts and herds of cows and goats of the Maasai. There are many Irapws farms and villas in the area.
