Kilimanjaro

THE SUMMITS OF AFRICA

This remote and little visited area is located north of Mount Meru in the northeast of Tanzania.
It is known for its spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. One of the most iconic images of the continent is the sight of herds of elephants walking across the savannah with the snowcapped peak of the famous mountain in the background.

It is indeed one of the few areas in Africa where large male elephants with large tusks and more than 50 years old can be seen.

Some of these male elephants live permanently in the area together with the herds of females and their young which tend to migrate between the swamps of Amboseli National Park and the acacia forests of Sinya in search of water and food. Many of them have been studied by Cynthia Moss, the scientist, in Amboseli over a period of 25 years and constitute one of the most healthy elephant populations on the African continent.

totem-4PLACES OF INTEREST AND ACTIVITIES IN KILIMANJARO

The maasai originally occupied this area of Kilimanjaro, but in the last century the majority emigrated south. There are still nomadic communities in the area, dedicated to the care of their cattle and they resist the attempts of the government to move them to permanent settlements.

Kilimanjaro National Park includes mount Kilimanjaro, ideal for trekking, and the woodland areas at its base and surrounds. A large variety of animals inhabit not only the mountainous area but also the woods, where one can see for example buffalos, leopards and blue monkeys.

Shira-Hike

This area is famous for its views of Mount Kilimanjaro and its herds of elephants, some of the largest specimens in the whole of Africa. These plains were originally the bottom of a lake in the Pleistoceno era, but it is now dry and actually in its natural springs hippopotamus and myriads of birds can be seen.
